Try this: disconnect the spout connector then try to start it, if it starts you have a bad ECM, if not then disconnect the ignition coil connector and put a test light in it's place and crank the engine, watch for a flashing light on the test light, if the light flashes then your coil is bad if no flashing light then the ignition module and or distributor is bad, replace bad components, start engine, set base timing, turn off engine, reconnect spout connector and restart engine.

2003 Ford Ranger XLT V6 3.0L Auto. Brand new coil pack, spark plug cables, spark plugs. Cyl 1 does not fire. While engine running, moved spark plug cable from post 1 to post 2 and it fires and I can see the spark jump the gap. I know its the wrong timing, but was only for second to prove the #1 cable and spark plug were fine.
